Giulio, Aurelia, Mariagrazia, and Carlo Marchi all from Rosignano, Italy housed and fed American pilots after the invasion of Italy in 1944.

Lt. Robert Waugh became the only soldier who enlisted in the war from Maine to earn the Medal of Honor for his heroics at the Gustav Line in Italy. He is buried in the Sicily-Rome American Cemetery.

Sherman Andrews of Lubec, ME was pilot of a Bomber that went missing over Germany in 1944. In the 1990's his plane and the remains of he and his crew were discovered. He is now buried at the Jefferson Barrack National Cemetery in Missouri.
